Why hiring a professional career coach will always give you an edge or applicants with Chat GPT/AI generated resumes:

Something that is coming up more and more frequently is people using AI or Chat GPT generated resumes. Please don’t do it – nothing is better then sharing your authentic self in your resume. Chat GPT or AI can’t do that for you.

I’ll be honest, as a career coach, this new trend naturally had me worried AT FIRST because I work directly with clients to create resumes for them that speak like them and to their talents in the best way possible.  How do I do that?  I generate resume bullets through thorough discussions so I can really showcase their talent in the optimal way.

What I am seeing with AI or Chat GPT generated resumes though is this:

* Format – It is more cluttered than it needs to be. For example, the header is not clean and contains unnecessary information that detracts the reader from the important stuff – the skills and talents of the applicant.

*The bullets – this is the meat and core of your resume. They tend to be very neutrally worded. Potential employers want to know you did something very well (numbers, percentages, benefits, etc..), not just that you did it. In reviewing multiple resumes of this nature this is doing a huge disservice to applicants.

*Sections – The sections and order of them don’t make sense. For example, core competencies (which I would label Areas of Expertise, should be formatted nicely under the Professional Summary, not at the end of the resume.

*Outdated Information – “References Available Upon Request.” Okay folks, this is on most of these resumes that I’ve seen and it’s just plain outdated. Potential employers know you will provide them if asked and these days they often aren’t asked for due to liability issues. And many employers also often won’t give references for these reasons and will just confirm dates of employment which isn’t what they are looking for when calling a reference.
